Background Info

Grampian Housing Association awarded a 3 year open spaces maintenance contract worth £100,000 to Solstice Nurseries in 2006. Solstice Nurseries is a social enterprise providing training and employment in horticulture to people with mental health difficulties. The decision to award the contract to Solstice Nurseries was made in recognition of social value generation and value for money in providing the service.

Oldham Council and banking service

Background Info

Oldham Council carried out a tendering process which took into account social value when commissioning for a banking service.

Previously the banking service was provided by the Co-operative Bank, but instability of the organisation and opportunities to achieve greater value for money with a different provider led to a decision by Oldham Council to secure a new provider. Barclays Bank was awarded the contract, scoring higher than rival bidders Lloyds Bank and Nat West Bank on technical/service quality and pricing.

Devon County Council and partner authorities took into account creation of social value when re-commissioning their recycling contract. The contract was awarded to Mid Devon Community Recycling (MDCR). Unfortunately in this example, the organisation commissioned was unable to fulfil the contract. See below for more information.

Blackpool Council

Background Info

During 2012 Blackpool Council undertook a competitive exercise to appoint a development partner to deliver a £50m distinctive residential–led neighbourhood scheme in the Rigby Road Area of Blackpool. The development partnership includes delivery of 400 new homes to appeal to a range of families and smaller households and development of new public open space to introduce green infrastructure to the urban area. The appointed bidder was Hollinwood Homes.
